The Outdoors and Me!

porcarojohn

Hello, and welcome to my Blog Outdoor Secrets! My name is John and I am going to give a little bit of a backstory on me and how I got into being the outdoorsman that I am today. From a very young age I was always intrigued in Fishing. This was the first sport that caught my attention (Pun Intended) What was odd about this was there was nobody in my family that fished or hunted. The last generation was my grandmother’s father, and her mothers dad.

I had been taken fishing one time by my uncle at a fish farm where one would choose the size of trout they wanted to catch and then would pay for the fish. Kind of cheating now that I look at it, however it was a great way to get a five year old into a sport that I would come to learn takes a lot of time and patience. I continued to fish and learn every chance I got from that day forward.

In May of 2009 at just ten years old I learned of news that I had been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. This was a huge hit to my future plans since from a young age I wanted to be a part of the U.S Navy as a fighter pilot, and eventually fly for the demonstration team The Blue Angels. This is where things turn and get back to the outdoors. As a teenager instead of throwing birthday parties my mother would drive me to a pier on Puget Sound and a buddy of mine and I would go sit out in the freezing January temperatures and try to target Market Squid. I know, right? Squid fishing for a 16 year old's birthday in freezing temps may not sound appealing, however I loved every minute of it.

One day my mother and I were talking about what I was going to do for college and the degree I would try to pursue since graduation was coming fast, and she had suggested getting a two year degree and trying to become a Game Warden for Washington since I was so interested in the outdoors.

The fall after graduating I started school with the goal of receiving a two year degree. I learned shortly after that the requirements to become a WDWF officer was a lot harder than I thought, and that the easiest way was to receive a Bachelor's Degree in either Natural Resource Sciences or Criminal Justice. Which brings me to where I am today. I am finishing my final year at Central Washington University, and will be receiving my Bachelors in Law and Justice. I still continue to fish as much as possible, and have even branched out to all sorts of hunting. These were all skills and passions that I just picked up out of nowhere, since I did not have family members to teach me along the way. It shows that determination and a love for something can make anything possible, and I would not be where I am today without the outdoors!
